The lighting in my room is flourescent (not the cheap bar type)…the color is white. It’s not like the nice yellow bright ones in hotels, but it is decent enough. I have modern zen-like furniture in my room, I got the platform bed nad minimal furnishing. All furniture are colored dark chocolate brown. Cushions are white, creams and golds with bright accents like orange throw pillows and natural greens from decorative plants and I got pebbles. Flooring is golden brown wood.

I’d like to paint the walls a beige, taupe or any other earthy colors to really warm up with room a little (also thinking of painting one wall a reddish tone, like mediteranean red), but am concerned how it might turn out under whitish light?

play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find colors that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the “painted” rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:

I think “robust orange” (# 6628) might be a good choice for the accent wall, and then paint the rest of the room “cork wedge” (# 7539).

You can take a photo of your house & upload it to the makeover gallery on this website:

You can get color suggestions & for $5 they’ll photoshop them onto your room so that you can get an idea of what it will look like.

It already has a decorative metal headboard and footboard (headboard cannot be removed, it is part of the frame), but I was wondering if I could get some sort of cushioned headboard or some other sort of cushion which I could attach to the metal headboard to make it comfy for sitting up against?

If so, any idea where I can get something like this?

I once saw an item that might work for you. It was a head board made like two very large pillows that were well padded/stuffed and was buttoned through with those large upholstery type padded buttons to hold the stuffing in place. The other things that they had was substantial loops on the top edge to allow fitting to a curtain pole set on the wall at the correct height to hold it in place. The material requires to be strong like upholstery but I can't see why a curtain shop or upholstery shop couldn't make it. Anyone who can sew could run this up at home. Hope this gives you an idea. If not clear email me from my information details.

i'm going to make some curtains and matching decorative cushions for my bedroom and i want to do some simple beading down the bottom or along the top or something..

can i have some tips on how to do it or any ideas for a basic design i could roughly go by that you might have??

I already have the pattern for the curtains themselves.

THANK YOU!!!

The easiest way is to add some beaded trim that you could by at a fabric store. However if you want to create a pattern yourself I would go with a simple design first because it will take a lot of time to hand bead something. Honestly I would go with a few straight lines, perhaps in various shades of color along the bottom. Or you could layout your fabric and make the lines go at a an angle, and mark them with chalk lines so you know where to sew.

How To Sew An Easy Decorative Cushion Cover

Posted by Sally on Oct-16-2008

Want to perk up your decor?  Decorative cushions are one quick and easy way.  Forget about paying retail prices for them, they are very easy and inexpensive to sew yourself.

Follow these simple steps to create a decorative cushion cover that takes little time to do, even if you have never done one before.

A pillow in this style is sometimes called a “Harem” pillow.  It is a modified version of a”Knife Edge” pillow.

If you have old knife edge pillows around, this is a great way to dress them up.

To make the “Harem” cover, follow these steps:

1.  Determine your desired pillow size and add 1/2 inch seam allowance to each side.  Measure and cut 2 squares or rectangles of fabric.

2.  Align right sides together and stitch the three sides of the pillow including around the corners on the fourth side.  Leave about a 2-1/2 inch opening in the middle of the fourth side to insert the pillow liner or foam.

Note:  There is the option to insert a zipper in the fourth seam or you can leave the opening and once you insert the pillow liner or foam.  You can hand stitch the opening closed.

3.  Press the seam allowances open

4.  Make sure NOT to cut or trim the seams or corners.

5.  While the pillow cover is wrong side out, draw a line across each corner on an angle about 2-1/2 inches down from the corner.

6.  While still wrong side out, pinch and gather up the corners with your fingers along the drawn line.

7.  Use string or strong carpet thread to wrap around the pinched corner and tie a secure knot.

8.  Now, turn the cover right side out.

9.  Insert your knife edge pillow liner or form.

Note:  It is not necessary to tie the corners of your knife edge pillow liner.

10.  Close the zipper or slipstitch the opening closed.

Enjoy your Harem pillow.

Another idea is to go ahead and turn your pillow cover right side out first and then tie all four corners for a different look.  Tie the corners with some decorative cord and tassels.

Cut up sheets or pillow cases to make your Harem pillows to match your bedroom decor. It adds a real decorator touch!

If you are artistic, here is your chance to have your accent pillows make a statement in your home.  A pillow is the perfect palette to do your creative thing whether it is stitching, painting, photography, or whatever, put it on your pillows.

Try it! It just makes sense!
