Pillows come in all kinds of colors and fabrics. You can even
make them from placemats and napkins. The trick is to have a pillow form. Either an old pillow that you don't like any more or a new form from some fabric place like Walmart or JoAnn's. Solid, print, wool, fleece, chennille, silk. All good choices!

First of all, I must be sure you know this sad truth- It is actually cheaper to buy pillows that are already made. Sad, but true.
That said, assuming you still want to go through with this, I would recommend a good heavy cotton for durability. It just keeps getting softer and more luxuriant every time you wash it. Which brings me to my next thought- Make sure you make them with zippers or buttons so you just whip off the covers and toss them in the washing machine. Trust me. It would really suck to make a great pillow and not be able to wash it. (for obvious reasons) I would try to avoid synthetics, they are itchy and they stretch out. Really, if you're going to invest the time and effort to make pillows by hand, get a good tough natural fiber. They just get better with age.

My source? I'm old and I sew way too much for a dude.
if you're gonna use the pillows to take naps , then you hshould choose a fabric that feels good next to YOUR face. everyone has 'favorite' materials. i like soft cotton
